The Spavins Legal Story

It all started with a baby.

I was driven to attend law school by my desire to help people. I had observed that many challenges we face boil down to ineffective communication.  My education refined my precision and process of communication in order to best help others.

I began my legal career at a small litigation firm on the south shore in Massachusetts in 2011.  At first, I served clients through criminal defense and insurance litigation.  Then my practice evolved to include divorce work and helping clients that had lost a loved one navigate the probate court process.  I had the privilege to sit with many families after the loss of a loved one and help them through the legal process that happens alongside the grief process.

Then in 2014 I faced one of my greatest transitions in life – the birth of my first baby.  During many sleepless nights I considered my priorities and then created the plan for what I wanted to do and the legacy that I wanted leave for my family.  Sitting in the hospital with my son during some early health complications I reflected on the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” commonly used in medicine.  Could I possibly use planning to change outcomes for my clients?  In order to find out I decided that I would be my first client.

I created an inventory of my life, had the important conversations about what if, drafted my documents, and created loving messages for my family.  When I was finished, I was relieved to know that my family would stay out of court and out of conflict in the event of my death or incapacity and that they would have some loving words directly from me.  I also had blueprint for who and what mattered most to me and that has guided me every day.

When I established my own law firm in 2015, I set out to serve my community by sharing how estate planning can not only help their loved ones after they're gone, but how planning can actually benefit their own lives right now.  By working with a trusted advisor my clients are able to take the time to truly understand their priorities, what they have, where they are, and where they want to go in their lives.

I noticed over the years that people find me during their own transitions: having a new baby, after a divorce, a diagnosis, embracing retirement, or facing their own recent loss of a loved one.  Transitions can be challenging and scary at times. They also represent incredible opportunities for change and growth.  Transitions are easier to manage when you have someone to walk beside you and help to learn the new lay of the land.

My son is now a vibrant little boy who dreams about outer space.  I welcomed my vivacious daughter in 2017 along with all the joy in her heart.
