3 Steps to Getting More Organized
Most famously stated by the founding father that doubled up as an inventor, being organized and having a plan can save us the heaps of headaches & stress that come with the uncertainty of the future. Be it in knowing what will happen if an unfortunate event takes away you or a loved one or even keeping in mind what you want your coming week to look like, getting organized can help reassure you that if something goes wrong, you’ll know what to do.
While you may not necessarily have to organize and plan constitutions & inventions like the founding father, following these 3 simple rules can help you lay the groundwork for a more organized life that future you will be thankful for.
Acknowledge your space(s) & start decluttering
Be it something as small as decluttering your wallet & throwing out business cards from years ago or loyalty cards from restaurants that have since shut down, making your spaces your own and decluttering them can help give your mind the ease that it needs. Our personal favorite method involves separating all visible items into 3 categories: items to keep, items to throw away & items to put aside. Making sure that everything in your space serves a purpose and you won’t be tempted to let your mind wander on useless junk when focusing on tasks at hand. Our recommendation is to start small & scale-up. Declutter your wallet, leave your keys and phone in the same spots, lay out your clothing for the next day ahead of time. Whatever the change is, it will build momentum and eventually help to make you more organized.
Plan out daily routines + stick to it
After having clean spaces with a purpose behind them, a key step that can help you stay on top of your responsibilities is having planned out daily routines. Most importantly, however (and this is something many people don’t stress) is making a plan that you can actually stick to and follow through with. While making a plan is commendable in and of itself, sticking through with it and utilizing it is what will ultimately get you the results. Using online services for simple tasks such as banking, having a checklist with important reminders & even scheduling off time for self-recovery & spending time with loved ones can help you visualize your responsibilities & give your subconscious brain a reminder on how to allot your time so that you can get everything you need to do done.
Accept things may sometimes not work out & have contingencies
With everything said & done, it is important to also remember that while we can plan and organize for so many things, ultimately we do it to prepare for the unexpected & what makes situations unexpected to some degree is the fact that there will be certain things that can happen despite our best efforts at organization. While for many this may be a sign to give up on getting organized completely, we want to help you reframe that thought process into acknowledging that things may not work out sometimes but by having contingencies and trying over and over again, you can help mitigate and reduce what goes wrong when getting organized. Missed your alarm and overslept so now you’re behind on your planned day? Instead of going aloof completely, acknowledge why that may have been and focus on making the most of the day still at hand. Didn’t allocate enough time to finish a task & now you’re struggling with another deadline? Acknowledge the moment & give yourself time to make the necessary changes for the future. By reframing moments of surprise into moments of learning for the future, we can better train ourselves to be ready for what life may present us with.
Key Takeaways
While we may not be inventing bifocals or worrying about basic human rights, our lives and the lives of our loved ones require organization. By making sure that we have designated, decluttered spaces where we can make plans that we stick to regardless of what goes wrong, we can ensure that we stay on top of our responsibilities and go through life with much less stress.
